Rs 128-cr sewerage, water supply project in Karnal gets administrative nod

With an aim to provide basic civic amenities in the eight newly regularised colonies and other urban areas of the city which fall under the Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC), the Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) will lay sewerage and water supply pipelines under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)-2. The department has received administrative approval for it and the estimated cost of the project will be Rs 128.21 crore.

Now, the PHED has sent the project details to the headquarters for technical approval. The authorities stated that after that, a tender process would be initiated for the project.

As per the authorities, out of the total amount, Rs 89.67 crore will be spent on installing 12-km sewer lines in the newly regularised colonies and 48-km in other urban areas. A sum of Rs 38.54 crore will be spent on laying 13 km of water supply pipelines and installing 20 tubewells. Eight of these tubewells will be set up in these colonies, while 12 will cater to other areas of the city.

“After we get the technical approval, we will initiate the tender process for the project,” said Vikas Balyan, XEN, PHED.

Vaishali Sharma, Commissioner, KMC, said that the PHED would execute the work under the AMRUT-2 scheme. She said colonies, including Kanika Vihar Extension, RK Puram Part-2, Sukhbir Colony, RK Puram Extension, Vijay Nagar, Balram Colony (Phoosgarh), Shaktipuram Extension and Vikas Colony on Meerut Road, and some areas of the city would be covered under the project.

“I have directed the officials concerned to expedite the technical approval process and ensure that tenders are issued promptly to start the work at the earliest,” said the Commissioner, emphasising that the project would not only provide residents an adequate supply of drinking water but also address the problem of sewage disposal.
