As the BJP celebrated 10 years of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Congress called it a black day in the history of the Millennium City, Gurugram. Targeting the BJP, Congress candidates from Gurugram and Badshahpur, Mohit Grover and Vardhan Yadav, respectively, said the downfall of the city had started exactly 10 years ago on this day and the city had now become ‘kuda gram’.

“What are they celebrating? They should hold these celebrations on the Bandhwari garbage mountain as that has become the city’s identity. Search for Gurugram on social media. Ten years ago, pictures of high-rise buildings would pop up, but now, pictures of garbage surface everywhere. They started with the abhiyan, which became an easy way of carrying out corrupt practices. All thanks to the abhiyan, Gurugram is not even amongst the top 100 clean cities of the country,” said Vardhan Yadav.

Agreeing Mohit Grover said Congress handed over Millennium City to BJP but will now inherit a mess city after 10 years.

“We don’t deserve this. The air is polluted, water and soil contaminated. What is BJP celebrating. The city was way cleaner and livable 10 years ago. Today, we have three civic agencies with crores of budget, but getting your street swept is a herculean task,” Grover said.

Though all candidates have highlighted sanitation as their key priority, Gurugram is yet to see a concrete vision document or a road map to manageme waste. None of the candidates have even cared to visit the landfill village Bandhwari or other neighbouring villages. The MCG has pompously announced that it would clear the landfill by December and even Gurugram MP, Rao Rao Inderjit Singh has announced he would sit on dharna if the plan failed.
