Haryana to adopt IEC activities to check water table decline
Chandigarh, July 16
To ensure community participation in the Atal Bhujal Yojana, the state plans to adopt aggressive and effective IEC (information, education and communication) activities to spread awareness about the declining groundwater levels in the state.
This was stated by Atal Bhujal Yojana Project Director Satbir Singh Kadian while presiding over a review meeting as regards the progress of the ongoing project in the state. The meeting was held at the Irrigation and Water Resources (I&WR) Department, Panchkula.
Kadian said, “The Atal Bhujal Yojana is a groundwater management scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 95th birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on December 25, 2019.”
Haryana is one of the seven states where Atal Bhujal Yojana is being implemented by the I&WR Department. Fourteen districts (36 blocks covering 1,669 gram panchayats) have been identified for planned intervention where the groundwater consumption and the rate of water table decline are high.
Kadian said the Atal Bhujal Yojana was a Central scheme with an outlay of Rs 6,000 crore, out of which Rs 3,000 crore was being provided as loan from the World Bank and Rs 3,000 crore as matching contribution from the Government of India.
The funds were being provided to the states as grants-in-aid. Funds under the scheme would be disbursed from the World Bank to the Centre, he added. — TNS
