Om Prakash Chautala, Haryana ex-chief minister, dies of cardiac arrest
Indian National Lok Dal president and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala died in Gurugram on Thursday, a party spokesperson said. He was 89.
Chautala, a five-time chief minister of Haryana and former deputy prime minister Devi Lal's son, suffered a cardiac arrest at his Gurugram home and was immediately rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, while condoling Chautala' s death, said: "His contribution to the state politics will always be remembered."
Chautala was born to Devi Lal, the former Deputy Prime Minister of India. He is survived by three children --Abhay Singh Chautala, Ajay Singh Chautala and a daughter Sunita Chautala.
Abhay is a former MLA from the Ellenabad constituency and has also been the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Legislative Assembly from October 2014 till March 2019.
Chautala's grandson, Dushyant Chautala, has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana. He is also a former Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from the Hisar constituency.
Chautala has served as the Chief Minister of Haryana from December 2, 1989 to May 22, 1990, from July 1 1990 to 17 July 17, 1990, again from March 22, 1991 to April 6, 1991 and, finally, from July 24, 1999 to March 5 2005.
He had been a part of NDA and Third Front (non-NDA & non-UPA front) at the national level.
