Harmohinder Singh Lucky gets Lucky, is Chandigarh Congress chief
Chandigarh, June 12
The Congress has appointed its senior leader Harmohinder Singh Lucky as the new president of the city unit of the party.
Lucky replaced Subhash Chawla, who resigned from the post yesterday. The Congress had appointed Chawla as the city unit president in February last year.
Lucky, who is considered a close confidant of former Union minister Pawan Kumar Bansal, said, “My priorities will be to strengthen the party in Chandigarh and take up various issues of public concern. The city Congress will be geared up for the 2024 parliamentary elections.”
It will be a tough task for Lucky to take along all party leaders. Two sitting councillors of the party have joined the BJP after the MC elections last year and there are reports of factionalism in the party.
“All Congressmen who have somehow remained neglected will be involved in the party activities. I will first meet all senior leaders of our party. Also, many people from other parties want to join us,” he said.
Lucky had represented a ward comprising Sectors 20 and 33. In 2006, he became the deputy mayor. He lost last two elections by a thin margin.
Lucky (48), a lawyer by profession, started his political career as a student leader at DAV College and remained in the NSUI and the Youth Congress. He later became district Congress president. He also remained Senate and Syndicate member of Panjab University twice. Lucky was holding the position of general secretary and chief spokesperson of the Chandigarh Congress Committee before becoming the city Congress chief.
