Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 26

The management committee of a historical gurdwara at Alamgir village in Ludhiana and the Dehlon police, acted promptly and decisively to avoid an unsavoury situation that could have resulted from a recent act of sacrilege by a Mazhabi Sikh at the gurdwara’s langar hall.

The suspect, Balbir Singh of Lapran village in Payal subdivision, allegedly brought cooked meat to the langar hall at around 9.30 am on Friday. However, the alert volunteers noticed the dish’s non-vegetarian nature disguised as cooked vegetables and informed the police. The suspect had allegedly told the volunteers that he wanted to contribute to the langar what he had originally planned to take to a hospital

After receiving information about the incident, cops supervised by Assistant Commissioner of Police Guriqbal Singh arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect after promptly filing an FIR under Section 298 of the BNS.

The situation could have turned ugly had the volunteers and senior management committee members not kept their cool and sought police assistance right away.

SGPC member Charan Singh Alamgir said, “The volunteers noticed the cooked meat as soon as the suspect poured the contents of his container into an empty bucket at the langar hall. The anomaly was brought to the attention of Assistant Manager Hardeep Singh, who called the police and handed over the suspect,” praising the efforts of Manager Rajinder Singh Tohra, Hardeep Singh and volunteers serving meals in dealing with the situation.

Dehlon police confirmed registration of the FIR against Balbir and said he had been sent to judicial remand.
