High drama unfolded today at Girls Hostel Number Seven of Punjabi University as hostel residents launched a protest against the prevailing poor hygiene conditions. The protest, which escalated quickly, was triggered by the discovery of insects in the food served to the students in the university mess.

Outraged by the incident, the hostel residents began raising slogans against the university authorities, demanding immediate action. The protest gained momentum as members of the different students’ union joined the hostel residents, amplifying their voices. The students also recorded videos of insects found in their food, which were widely circulated on social media, highlighting the unsanitary conditions in the hostel.

In a dramatic turn of events, the students reportedly chased a university official who seemed to be evading their questions regarding the hygiene issues.

Despite repeated attempt none of the university authority was available for comments. Gurdas, a student union leader, confirmed that the matter was promptly brought to the notice of the university authorities. “Following the issue, the contract of the person handling the mess was scrapped,” he said, adding that this was a necessary step to address the immediate concerns of the students.

The students did not stop at protesting the food quality. They also gathered in the students’ hall to voice their grievances about other ongoing issues. They alleged that the sewerage system in the university has been clogged for a long time, leading to unsanitary conditions. Additionally, they complained about frequent disruptions in electricity and water supply, which have been a persistent problem.

“The issue has been raised before the authorities several times in the past, but no heed was paid,” said one of the protesting students.
