A science graduate from the city, Muskan Puri, has cleared the UPSC 2024 preliminary exams whose results were declared on July 1. A first UPSC aspirant from her family, Muskan has enrolled under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme implemented by the District Employment and Business Bureau, which holds free coaching classes for all competitive exams for girls from all backgrounds.
Muskan’s father Lakhbir Chand Puri is a Grade II Technician in the Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Amritsar, and her mother Sonu Bala is a homemaker. A girl with big dreams, Muskan shared how this programme of the district administration helped her chase her aim, without putting any financial burden on her family.
“I enrolled for this programme in January 2024 after clearing an entrance exam. We have weekly classes of two hours. I also learn from professional mentors which helps me gain confidence and clear my vision. This is my third attempt for the UPSC exams,” she shared. Earlier, she relied on self-study for preparing for the exams. She dedicates five to six hours daily to her study.
Being a science student, her favourite subjects include environment studies. “It’s crucial and contemporary as a lot of work has to be done for saving the environment and for ensuring a sustainable future. Also, I enjoy studying international relations and political science,” said Muskan.
A former student of SR Government College for Women, Muskan said arranging finances for aspiring girl students gave them an opportunity to aim for the sky.
“If I am able to pursue my dream, I would love to do something in the education and health sector, maybe come to my hometown Amritsar and work for its development.”
Meanwhile, Ghanshyam Thori, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman, District Employment and Business Bureau, Amritsar, has promised to provide all possible assistance on the administration’s behalf to Muskan to help her achieve her aim.
Tirthpal Singh, CEO, District Employment and Business Bureau, said, “We have 70 students who are taking coaching for various competitive exams under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme. We hold classes in two batches in the morning and afternoon for the convenience of girls. The bureau has tied up with mentors and institutes to guide students.”
