Four held in car snatching case

With the arrest of four persons, the city police on Sunday claimed to have cracked the incident in which unidentified armed persons had snatched a car from a banker on the intervening night of March 31 and April 1.

Those arrested were identified as Lakhjit Singh, alias Lali, of Chhichherwal village, Prabhdeep Singh, Arshdeep Singh and Gurbinder Singh, all residents of Tarn Taran area.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Prabhjot Singh Virk said Saurav Bansal originally hailed from Ganganagar and now residing in Ranjit Avenue D block area and his friend Lucky Thakur were returning from the railway station when unidentified persons snatched their car at gunpoint.

They were travelling in a car (PB-53-C-0821) and turned towards the Starbucks caffe side from the Gumtala road when a black coloured Hyundai Accent car hit their car from the rear. Initially, they ignored it and moved ahead, but the accused overtook them and stopped abruptly before their car near the Dasehra ground in Ranjit Avenue. The suspects started arguments and as the duo came out of the car. At this point, the accused took out a pistol and pointed at them. They later snatched their car and fled from the scene.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Varinder Singh Khosa said the police scanned the footage of CCTVs and found that the suspects sped away towards the Tarn Taran side. Following a tip-off, the police on Saturday nabbed Lakhjit Singh along with the snatched car. Later, his interrogation led to the arrest of the remaining three suspects. The police also recovered the weapon used in the crime. He said further probe was on to recover the car which was used by the suspects during carjacking.
