April 19 is observed as World Liver Day and World Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Day.
IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder in which patients suffers abdominal pain and altered bowel habit (diarrhoea or constipation) in the absence of a specific and unique organic pathology. Meanwhile, liver disease has become more of a lifestyle disease with more cases of liver ailment being reported these days.
“Experiencing signs and symptoms of the IBS can lead to depression or anxiety. Depression and anxiety also can make it worse. Complications include intolerance to several foods, vitamin and mineral deficiency, weight loss, development of piles, etc. Many people with moderate to severe IBS report poor quality of life,” said Dr Dinesh Gupta, senior consultant and head, department of gastroenterology, hepatology and advanced endoscopy, Deepak Hospital.
Dr Gupta said cases of both fatty liver and non-fatty liver diseases had increased over the years. One should follow simple steps to take care of their liver. “Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, keeping body weight under control, exercising regularly, eating healthy, consuming fresh fruits and vegetables and trying to remain stress-free are some points to keep in mind for a healthy liver. One should see a liver specialist if they have any risk factor or symptoms of liver disease,” he said. — TNS
