A large number of residents staged a protest near the BSF’s entry gate on the outskirts of Mohar Jamsher village in Fazilka, which is surrounded by Pakistan from three sides.

The BSF has set up a check- post at entry point of the village for security reasons.

Punjab Students’ Union leader Dheeraj Kumar and zonal leader Kamaljeet Singh, who led the dharna said the pupils, especially girls were allegedly harassed on November 30.

They alleged that in absence of women staff, the girl students had to face tough time during security checks.

Though there’s barbed fencing on the three sides of the village, the checking point has been set up, said miffed villagers.

The security forces said since the village is surrounded by Pakistan from three sides, they received numerous reports of smuggling of drugs and had nabbed several smugglers in the past few months.

Youth leaders Pratap Singh Mansa and Sukhdev Singh said every item, including foodgrain, needs to be unloaded and loaded again in tractor-trailers for security check, thus causing inconvenience to the village residents.
