Ferozepur farmer killed in road accident near Rajpura
Patiala, February 24
A 34-year-old farmer, who was going to participate in the ‘Dilli Chalo’ march at the Shambhu barrier, died in a road accident near Rajpura on Saturday.
Deceased Gurjant Singh of Mansurdewa village in Ferozepur, along with 10 others, was headed to Shambhu to take part in a candlelight march, scheduled for today evening, when another vehicle rammed into their tractor-trailer from the rear.
Gurjant owned two acres of land and is survived by a mother, wife and two kids. Farmers said Gurjant used to raise issues affecting the farming community on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, hundreds of farmers camping at the Shambhu barrier from the last 10 days took out a candlelight march today in memory of peasants who died during the ongoing agitation.
The protesting farmers led by the union leaders placed candles on barricades installed by the Haryana Police. “Today’s candlelight march is a symbol of farmers’ unity and to remember ‘Shaheed Shubhkaran Singh’ and other martyred farmers,”said Jagjit Singh Dallewal, head, BKU (Ekta-Sidhupur).
He said they would hold a conference on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on February 25 at the Shambhu and Khanauri barriers and would burn effigy of the WTO on February 26.
Dallewal added that they would hold meetings with other farm unions on February 27 and 28 to chart out their next move.
