Farmers burning stubble to face two-season market ban

Tightening the noose around farmers involved in stubble burning, the Director, Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Department, Haryana, has directed all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Deputy Directors Agriculture (DDAs) to take stringent action against farmers involved in stubble burning. Farmers would be barred for two seasons to sell their crops in the grain markets through e-Kharid portal, which ensures procurement at the minimum support price (MSP). Besides, an FIR will be lodged against those found violating the ban.

They have been asked to make a red entry in the ‘Meri Fasal, Mera Byora’ (MFMB) record of the farmers, for which provision to make such entries has already been enabled in the DDAs login system. “The Director of the department has issued directions to us. A red entry would be made in the records of the farmers found involved in stubble burning. They will be barred from selling their crops in the grain markets through the e-Kharid portal for the next two procurement seasons. We are already registering FIRs against the farmers for burning stubble,” said Dr Wazir Singh, Deputy Director Agriculture (DDA), Karnal.

In the letter, the Director emphasised the khasras and the details of farmers found responsible for farm fires must be tagged in the system to ensure monitoring and accountability.

As per the officials, so far nearly 100 FIRs have been registered against farmers involved in fire farms.

Dr Jagminder Singh, Joint Director, Agriculture Haryana, said a circular has been issued in this regard and so far over 100 FIRs have been registered. Fines are being imposed. Farmers would not be able to sell their produce in the grain markets for two seasons if they were found involved in stubble burning.

Besides, action would be taken against officials for their negligence of not preventing stubble burning cases.
