Farmer loses Rs 61K to cyber fraudsters
A farmer of Andral village in the Salooni subdivision of the district has lost Rs 61,000 to a cyber fraud. Victim Dinesh Kumar filed a complaint in this regards at the Telka police post , seeking a swift action to get his money back.
According to Kumar, on Thursday evening he received a call and the person on the other side claimed that his phone number was about to be blocked. The caller asked him to follow instructions. Upon doing so, the call was diverted to fraudsters who claimed to be from the Mumbai Crime Branch. They alleged Kumar’s involvement in a Rs 6.5 crore scam.
To intimidate him, the scammers initiated a video call, stating they would monitor him throughout the night. By morning, the fraudsters demanded money from him, claiming it was necessary to “secure” his name in the case and also sought his bank account details. Kumar provided his the details and the fraudsters withdrew Rs 61,000 from his account. After receiving a notification on his phone Kumar realised that he has been defrauded. He reported the incident to the police.
Chamba SP Abhishek Yadav said a case had been registered and an investigation was under way. He urged people to remain cautious of such fraudulent calls and avoid sharing personal information.
