Eyeing Punjabi votes, JJP plans Moosewala’s statue in Dabwali

Following its split with the BJP, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) has begun efforts to regain its foothold in the district. JJP’s secretary general Digvijay Chautala said the party had planned to install a statue of late singer Sidhu Moosewala in Dabwali. He said the statue would be ready within two months and would be sculpted once the Dabwali administration accepted their request for land to install it.
Digvijay said he had already taken the permission of Moosewala’s father Balkaur Singh, who, he said, had also agreed to unveil the statue. The JJP leader highlighted Moosewala’s journey from a modest background to national fame and called him an inspiration for the youth. He said he was of the belief that the statue would motivate the youth in Dabwali too.
Dabwali has a significant number of Punjabi voters who supported the Congress in the recent General Election. As the Akali Dal then backed the INLD, the JJP is eyeing the Punjabi votes during the coming Haryana Assembly elections.
The areas in Dabwali that are dominated by the Punjabi community include Kalanwali, Rania, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Ratia and Tohana. These areas once used to be the strongholds of the Chautala family.
Though Digvijay had trailed behind Congress’ Bhupinder Singh Hooda in the 2019 Lok Sabha election and even lost the Jind Assembly bypoll, he said he was “determined to win the family’s traditional seat Dabwali this time.”
In the coming Haryana elections, Dabwali may for the first time witness members of the Chautala family contesting against each other from different parties. Amit Sihag, from the Devi Lal family, has been preparing to contest on the Congress ticket. Digvijay is set to represent the JJP while Aditya Chautala is eyeing the BJP ticket. INLD’s Kanta Chautala might also enter the poll fray. — OC
