Eye on 100% green inland waterways shipping in 5 yrs

The Central Government has been working on modalities to transition its entire coastal and inland waterways shipping to renewable energy within the next five years.

Major ports, such as Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, Gujarat, Visakhapatnam Port, New Mangalore Port and VOC Port in Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, are already generating renewable energy more than their demand.

Speaking at the FICCI’s Green Shipping & Ports Conclave 2024 conclave, TK Ramachandran, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, emphasised the urgent need for the maritime sector to embrace sustainability. “In five years, it is doable. If not in international shipping, at least coastal and river inland waterways that are under our control, we are working at making that completely green,” he added.
