With the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections scheduled for later this month, enthusiasm is building up across DU campuses. Banners and posters now fill colleges, as student unions gear up for the contest. The BJP-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which won three of the four key posts in last year’s elections, announced its election committee on Sunday and released a list of nine probable candidates on Monday.

Unions’ aims

  • ABVP is working to gather feedback from students to craft its manifesto, with a focus on improving infrastructure in colleges and hostels, enhancing women’s safety and addressing other pressing concerns based on student input.
  • The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has made menstrual leave for all women students a key priority.

The list includes prominent names such as Rishabh Chaudhary, Rishiraj Singh and Aman Kapasiya. Pre-election campaigning began on September 9 and will run until September 12, with candidates visiting colleges to interact with students. “We are sharing the accomplishments of the outgoing ABVP-led DUSU and listening to student demands through feedback mechanisms,” said ABVP Delhi State Secretary Harsh Attri. “This will help us build a framework to address students’ needs and expectations. The final list of four candidates will be released soon.”

ABVP is also working to gather feedback from students to craft its manifesto, with a focus on improving infrastructure in colleges and hostels, enhancing women’s safety and addressing other pressing concerns based on student input.

Meanwhile, the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has made menstrual leave for all women students a key priority. NSUI has begun classroom-to-classroom campaigns, with 12 potential candidates — four of whom will be shortlisted — engaging with students to understand issues on the ground.

In the 2023 DUSU elections, ABVP secured the president, secretary, and joint secretary posts, while NSUI claimed the vice-president position.
