Payal Kapadia scripts history as All We Imagine As Light nominated in Best Director and Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language) categories for Golden Globe 2025
Filmmaker Payal Kapadia created history after being nominated in the Best Director (Motion Picture) category for All We Imagine As Light at the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards. This marks the first time an Indian director has been nominated in this category.
All We Imagine As Light has received a total of two nominations, with the other one being for Best Motion Picture (Non-English Language). Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam, the film is an official Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos from France and Chalk & Cheese and Another Birth from India. The film follows Prabha, a troubled nurse who receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and Anu, her young roommate seeking intimacy with her boyfriend. A trip to a beach town allows them to confront their desires. The film stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Hridhu Haroon.
Earlier this year, the film created history by winning the prestigious Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.
All We Imagine As Light premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in its much-feted Competition Section on May 23. It was the first Indian film to feature in the festival’s main segment in 30 years. The last Indian movie to make it to the competition section was Shaji N Karun’s Swaham in 1994.
Earlier, the film also won the Best International at the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Best International Feature trophy at the reputed Gotham Awards 2024.
The nominations for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards were announced on December 9, by Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut.
They revealed the nominees across 27 categories.
The Golden Globes recognize achievements across film and TV, with categories for cinematic and box office achievement in film and best performance in stand-up comedy on television, which were introduced last year and are set to return this year. The awards will stream Live and exclusively in India on Lionsgate Play on January 6 starting 6:30 am.
Emilia Perez leads with 10 nods, The Brutalist earns 7
Musical thriller Emilia Perez and post-World War II epic The Brutalist topped the roster of films nominated on Monday for the 2025 Golden Globes, the Hollywood honours that kick off the awards season leading to the Oscars. Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language movie released by Netflix, scored 10 nods and independent distributor A24’s The Brutalist earned seven.
Both movies will compete for the top Globes honour — best film drama — with papal selection story Conclave, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two, historical drama Nickel Boys and September 5, the story of sports journalists who covered a hostage crisis at the Olympics.
Box office smash Wicked, adapted from a long-running Broadway play about the witches in The Wizard of Oz, landed four nominations. It faces dark romantic comedy Anora and others in the best movie musical or comedy category.
Winners of the Globes will be chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, compared with roughly 9,000 voters who select the Academy Awards.
Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the January 5 Globes ceremony for the first time.
The show, in the past a booze-fuelled and more free-wheeling occasion than the Oscars, will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ .
