Amritsar: Elderly man of Gopal Nagar area murdered
Amritsar, February 29
An elderly man was brutally killed by unidentified persons in Gali number 3 of Gopal Nagar area located on the Majitha road here in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
The deceased, identified as Vijay Khanna (78), used to live alone in the house. The incident came to light when his neighbourers heard the voice of cutting something with a saw. When they shouted what happened, two persons came out of the house after jumping over the wall and fled the spot.
Residents from the neighbourhood repeatedly knocked at the door and found no response and thereafter they informed the police.
Senior police officials led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr Pragya Jain reached the spot and found the man the dead. His mouth was tied and he was apparently bludgeoned to death. The police were yet to ascertain the cause of the murder.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (North) Varinder Singh Khosa said Vijay Khanna was alone in the house. He has four children — two sons and two daughters — all married. Two of them were settled in Canada while one lives in Chandigarh and one in Gurgaon.
“As per a preliminary probe, the incident occurred between 3am and 5am. The cause behind the incident was still unknown as there was no hint of theft or robbery,” he said. He added that the police had found important clues in the case. Police teams were working on different leads to crack the case, he said.
The incident left the residents of the locality shocked who said that the CCTV footage in the area found two persons entering the house by jumping over the walls who escaped when the people raised an alarm.
