Education reforms in focus at PM-BJP CMs’ meeting

The National Education Policy (NEP), expectations from state governments with respect to fulfilment of its key goals and strengthening of examination processes were key areas of focus during the high-level review meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi with CMs of BJP-ruled states here on Saturday.

Thirteen CMs of the BJP-ruled states and all 15 deputy CMs of the party were present in the meeting. Speaking about the outcome of the deliberations, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, in-charge of the BJP’s Good Governance Cell, said the PM called for community participation in advancing the goal of developed India by 2047 and saturation coverage of government schemes.

The PM asked the chief ministers and their deputies to deploy social media tools in widespread dissemination of government schemes targeting four key pillars of Viksit Bharat – women, youth, farmers and poor. It is learnt that PM Modi also mentioned several Union Budget takeaways for marginalised segments and the middle class and asked colleagues to amplify the message to counter the “negative” opposition narrative.

A major part of the discussions was devoted to implementation of the NEP, which has been lagging in opposition-ruled states. BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh has taken the lead in NEP implementation, with Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday making a presentation of outcomes expected from state CMs on the NEP and the timelines for the same.

In the midst of the paper leak controversy, the leaders also discussed the need for robust examination processes and plug loopholes, if any. “The Education Minister spoke about the role of state governments in the implementation of the NEP and the expectations from them,” Sahasrebuddhe said.

The meeting also saw CMs making presentations on good governance best practices. UP’s village secretariat plan was detailed by CM Yogi Adityanath. The Assam Government’s model of filling up government vacancies, Tripura’s Amaar Sarkar (my government) initiative and Bihar’s strategy to deal with illegal miners were also discussed and hailed.

“Some special initiatives of Haryana and Maharashtra governments were also mentioned,” said Sahasrebuddhe.
