THE conclusion of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) poll campaigning marks a significant milestone, underscoring the successful efforts of both the administration and security forces. As the region navigated a high-stakes election after a decade, the seamless coordination between election officials, security agencies and local authorities ensured that the campaigning ended on a peaceful note. In this first Assembly election since the abrogation of Article 370, political parties freely campaigned across both Jammu and the Valley, a testament to the tight security that kept terrorism at bay. The key poll issues include the abrogation of Article 370, with debates on the restoration of statehood, and the focus on development in the region. Parties like the BJP emphasised the benefits of Article 370’s removal, citing peace and integration, while the Congress and regional parties like the NC and the PDP rallied for statehood restoration and protection of local identity.

With 40 seats up for grabs in the final phase, the competitive spirit between major players — the BJP, Congress, NC and PDP — is palpable. And what has stood out is the high voter enthusiasm and turnout, encouraged by the election arrangements, enabling widespread public participation. The Election Commission, in tandem with the police and armed forces, managed to maintain order and ensure safety despite the looming threats from across the border. Areas near the Line of Control and the International Border, usually vulnerable to disruptions, remained calm, with polling stations set up in even the most sensitive regions. Kashmir Zone IGP VK Birdi praised the coordination and intelligence-gathering by local officers, which helped prevent any law-and-order breakdown.

This successful election campaign has not only fortified faith in the region’s governance but also shown the world that democracy can thrive in J&K against all odds. A well-deserved pat on the back is due to all those involved.
