A drunken man allegedly stabbed his wife to death and left his teenaged son injured following an argument, police officials said on Friday.

The police said the incident occurred on the evening of November 19 at the family’s house in Khichripur.

The police received information from Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hospital about two persons, Geeta (35) and her son Raj (14), being admitted with stab wounds.

“Initially, both were conscious. However, Geeta had sustained a deep stab injury in her abdomen and was rushed to the operation theatre, where she was put on ventilator support. Raj, who had a stab wound to his chest, was discharged after preliminary treatment,” said DCP (East), Apoorva Gupta.

A police team arrived at the scene of the crime, and the statement of the injured teenager was recorded. In his statement, Raj revealed that his father, Sanju, had returned home heavily drunk and demanded money from his mother to buy more liquor, a police official said.

When she refused, the husband got angry and stabbed her in the abdomen. When his son tried to intervene, he stabbed him on the chest, the police official added.

Based on Raj's account, a case was registered for attempt to murder and it was later altered to murder after Geeta succumbed to her injuries.

A senior official said that the accused fled the scene, abandoning his mobile phone nearby to avoid being tracked.

“A manhunt was immediately launched, and his location was traced to his village in Uttar Pradesh. While our team was en route with assistance from the local police, we received information that the accused had attempted suicide by hanging himself from a tree. He was rescued by villagers and taken to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment,” the DCP said.

The accused remains under medical observation and will be taken into custody once he is discharged.
