Drug smuggler Tari put under detention
The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) and the Gurdaspur police in a joint operation have put dreaded smuggler Avtar Singh Tari under preventive detention. Tari was picked up by the police and ANTF men from his native Shahoor Kalan village under the Kalanaur police station.
In a statement, the Punjab Police said, “A significant milestone has been achieved with the preventive detention of Tari from the border district of Gurdaspur under the PIT-NDPS Act.” He has been detained for 2 years and sent to the Bathinda Central Jail.
Senior officials claim they had been following the fugitive for the past several weeks. His arrest was being seen as a major boost to the police drive for curbing smuggling of heroin, fake currency, arms and ammunition coming from across the border. However, no recovery of contraband has been made from Tari. Officials are tight-lipped about the entire operation.
