Drive to remove plastic waste launched in Shimla

To contribute towards sanitation and greenery in Shimla, the eco-club of Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV) on Wednesday launched the ‘plastic pickers’ campaign, in which 63 students of the college took part.

RKMV Principal Dr Anurita Saxena flagged-off the campaign to remove plastic and sensitise shopkeepers in the area between the IGMC Hospital and the Ridge regarding the scientific disposal of plastics.

During the campaign, teachers and members of the eco-club also visited classrooms to sensitise students about the safe disposal of plastics.

While addressing the students, the Principal said volunteers need to “think global, but act local” and therefore join in the “Clean Shimla, Green Shimla”” campaign to save earth and consequently, save humanity.

“The volunteers must not only clean their surroundings of harmful plastics, but also sensitise the general public regarding the harmful effects of plastic,” she stated.

The convener of the eco-club Kartik M Chauhan said this campaign was being conducted as part of the MoU signed between the Municipal Corporation, Shimla, and RKMV.
