Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan said weekend lockdown was imposed in the district to curb the rapid spread of coronavirus.

Despite several appeals, desired outcome had not been observed. Police and civil officers had to be out in the field and were forced to challan people loitering around despite weekend lockdown.

Issuing a warning to people saying “abide by the weekend lockdown, don’t invite complete lockdown”, the Deputy Commissioner said: “Any lockdown violation, henceforth, will have serious repercussions. We will not just challan violators, but will also be forced to inch towards complete lockdown”.

He said the Centre had already made it clear in its latest guidelines that ‘districts where positivity is more than 10 per cent or more in a week or where bed occupancy is more than 60 per cent, intensive and local containment measures should be taken with either indicator’.

He said: “Both indicators (positivity rate and bed occupancy) in case of Mohali district are higher than the suggested limit. So, we are heading towards a lockdown, if we fail to contain our movement”.

Making an appeal to the public, Dayalan said: “Don’t defeat the efforts of thousands of healthcare workers working relentlessly. Stay home, stay safe.”
