Several industrial units operating at Dharuhera town here are reportedly dumping waste in open places nearby while cleaning their septic tanks. This has been alleged in a complaint filed by Prakash Yadav, a local resident, with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCB), an authority that works under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti to check pollution.

Taking a serious note of it, the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has directed its Regional Officer in the district to inspect the units and ensure action against those guilty.

“Several industrial units at Dharuhera have neither sewerage connection nor sewage treatment plant, hence they have set up septic tanks on their premises. They get the tanks cleaned at regular intervals, but the waste is dumped either in nearby vacant plots, or along roads, emanating foul smell,” said Yadav in the complaint.

He said the situation worsened during monsoon, when the waste started flowing on roads and nearby residential areas along with the rainwater. The water also led to vector-borne diseases.

An official of the Public Health Engineering Department claimed that, as per rules, the waste could not be dumped in the open. It had to be disposed of in a nearby sewage treatment plant.

Harish Sharma, Regional Officer, HSPCB, said the complainant had not mentioned the name of the industries. “In compliance with the state authorities’ directives, we will inspect all units and will take appropriate action if any industry is found spreading pollution,” he added.
