Democracy has thrived in India for centuries: Justice Vivek Thakur
Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, on Saturday gave a memorial lecture on “India-the mother of democracy” at Dharamsala in a simple, but graceful ceremony organised by Adhivakta Parishad. The programme was attended by the district court judiciary and a large number of advocates.
After the ceremonial rituals of lighting of lamps and recital of Vande Matram, Kunwar Ajay Singh, district president, gave a brief of the host parishad, which according to him comprised patriotic advocates inspired by spirituality, ever ready to contribute to nation building. Advocate Ankur Soni and Ankush Soni felicitated the dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Vivek Singh Thakur justified the chosen theme “India-the mother of democracy” by citing examples from Indian and world history proving how democracy had thrived in this country from times immemorial.
Making a thorough dig into India’s golden past and also highlighting the subsequent distortions he impressed the audience. Referring to the preamble of the Indian Constitution, Thakur articulated on “Secular and Socialist” features imbibed in it. According to him Indian value system and empathy for the prosperity of the mankind finds expression in its much publicised and practised policy of “Sarv Dharm Sambhav”. He reiterated that India had always stood for the dignity of an individual caring for the last man in the row.
Justice Thakur gave a detailed explanation on how the rulers in India historically had been accountable to the people as “Nyasi” (the trustee). He gave archaeological details of excavation at places like Lethal in Gujarat to prove that democracy had thrived in India for at least 5,000 years. Thakur also mentioned about the wisdom and excellence prevalent in diversified fields in India which was amazing for the world community.
Thakur made a specific mention of Gargi, Maiti and Ahilaya to substantiate the dignified status of women in Indian society. The event was attended by District and Session Judges Rajiv Bali, Jyotsana Dadhwal, family court, Preeti Thakur, Chairman, Waqf Tribunal, Additional District Judges Rajesh Chauhan, Sheetal Sharma, Anil Sharma, Shikha Lakhanpal, Secretary, DLSA, Himanshu Misra, District Chairman, Consumer Commission, and a large number of advocates, which included Vishav Chakshu and Amit Chandel.
