Woman finds hidden cameras in rented home, landlord’s son held
A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly installing spy cameras in the bedroom and washroom on the premises let by his father to a woman in the Shakarpur area of East Delhi.
The victim, a Civil Services aspirant, was living alone in the house. According to the police, she had noticed unusual activity on her WhatsApp account but was unaware of the cause, as she lacked strong technical knowledge.
A friend advised her to check the linked devices on her WhatsApp account, where she discovered that her account was linked to an unknown laptop. She immediately logged out of the suspicious device.
“Feeling uneasy, she began searching for hidden cameras in her apartment. During the search, she found a spy camera mounted on the bulb holder in her bathroom, after which she called the police,” an official said.
The investigating officer conducted a thorough search of the apartment and discovered another camera hidden in the bulb holder of her bedroom.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, East District, Apoorva Gupta, said, “The woman informed the police that she often handed over her keys to the landlord’s son, Karan, who lived in the same building on a different floor.”
During interrogation, Karan revealed that three months earlier, when the victim had travelled to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh, she had entrusted her keys to him.
“Seeing an opportunity, he purchased three spy cameras and installed two — one in her bathroom and another in her bedroom. Since the cameras used memory cards to store videos and could not operate online, Karan frequently requested the victim’s keys under the pretext of needing to repair electrical fixtures and fans so he could retrieve the recorded footage from the memory cards to transfer to his laptop,” the DCP added.
The police recovered a spy camera and two laptops from Karan, which he had used to store the recorded videos.
A case has been registered under Section 77 (voyeurism) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Shakarpur police station. The accused, Karan, is currently being interrogated, and further investigation is ongoing, the police said.
Karan, who has been preparing for the Civil Services examination for the past seven years, is physically challenged.
