What led to Gahlot’s way out from AAP

With Gahlot’s departure, uncertainty looms large over the party’s internal dynamics and its strategy for the upcoming elections, leaving AAP in a precarious position as it faces mounting challenges from both external sources and internal dissent.

According to sources, tensions between Gahlot and the AAP leadership date back to August 15, during the Delhi government’s Independence Day celebrations. At the time, then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was in jail in the liquor policy scam, leaving the ceremonial task of unfurling the national flag under scrutiny.

Kejriwal had directed Education Minister Atishi to lead the ceremony, but Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena intervened, designating Home Minister Gahlot for the role, citing protocol that the Home Department oversees the Delhi Police which organises the ceremonial march-past.

The move sparked a clash between the AAP-led Delhi government and the L-G’s office, with AAP accusing the L-G of “petty politics.” Atishi labelled the L-G’s decision as “dictatorship,” criticising the BJP’s interference. Gahlot, who complied with the directive, reportedly strained his relationship with Kejriwal and other party leaders in the process.

Discord had also emerged in December 2022 when the Law Department was taken from Gahlot and handed to Atishi. Sources claim the change was driven by delays in pending work.

The rift deepened following a reshuffling of portfolios after Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest. With major portfolios such as finance and urban development going to Atishi, Gahlot was left with transport, home, and women and child development.
