Voting is currently underway at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House to elect the city's next mayor and deputy mayor, officials said on Thursday.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta have cast their votes, along with all seven Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi, who also exercised their franchise.

In a surprising twist, Congress councillor Sabila Begum resigned from the party’s primary membership on Thursday, announcing that she would vote for the AAP nominee. Begum’s resignation letter was posted by her husband on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Begum had defected to AAP in 2022 before rejoining Congress.

The mayoral elections, which are typically held in April, were delayed due to a standoff between the ruling AAP and opposition BJP. The new mayor is expected to serve a term of only five months.
