The National Power Training Institute (NPTI) regularly conducts a Training of Trainers (TOT) programme for power distribution companies, aimed at reducing technical and commercial losses in the transmission and distribution systems nationwide.

This was stated by Dr Tripta Thakur, Director General, NPTI, while inaugurating a two-day training programme at the head office of the institute here on Friday. She said more than 150 officials and employees of various discoms would be trained on various technical aspects that will not only help in honing the skills, but also the measures that could pave the way for reducing the overall losses in the distribution system. She said while the programme which was being carried in collaboration with the Power Finance Corporation (PFC) was meant mainly for the officials of junior management, the participants are given training both in online and offline mode.

Recalling the institute’s achievements, Dr Thakur said, “Over 9,000 officials have already been trained, and the NPTI aims to train 20,000 officials and employees of power distribution companies across the country in the near future. In the second phase of the training programme, which began in July, 166 officials have been trained.”

The training focuses on various skills, including advanced metering infrastructure, reducing aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, improving distribution network efficiency, minimising electrical asset failures, curbing power theft, enhancing security and disaster management, communication and soft skills and achieving higher consumer satisfaction.

Dr Thakur also announced that training will be extended under the ‘PM-Surya Ghar-Free Electricity Scheme’, already launched in several parts of the country. Additionally, the NPTI has initiated an awareness campaign under the Samarth Mission to address the issue of stubble burning during harvest season.
