Rajouri Garden fire: CM Atishi orders safety audit across Capital
The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against an unidentified person following a fire that broke out in a restaurant in the bustling Rajouri Garden market, police officials said on Tuesday.
The incident had forced several students from a nearby coaching institute to leap to an adjacent building for safety.
“An FIR under relevant provisions of law has been registered, based on the prima facie circumstances,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer.
The police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire and are reviewing CCTV footage of the area.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi visited the site on Tuesday to assess the situation and interacted with shopkeepers. She expressed concern over the negligence and emphasised the need for stringent safety measures to prevent such incidents.
“Yesterday, an unfortunate incident of fire took place at a restaurant in Rajouri Garden. Today, I visited the spot and inspected it. Due to lack of proper drainage, the MCD and the Fire Department had already cancelled the NOC of the restaurant and ordered it to be closed,” the Chief Minister said.
Atishi also highlighted the ongoing investigation and promised strict action against those found responsible. “The police are investigating the cause of the fire. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. To prevent recurrence of such incidents, the Fire Department has been instructed to conduct a fire safety audit across Delhi,” she wrote on X.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) confirmed that the restaurant in question was operating despite the cancellation of its no objection certificate (NOC) due to improper drainage and safety violations. However, the restaurant was closed on the day of the incident.
