PWD unveils ‘lavish’ inventory of Arvind Kejriwal’s former residence
The Public Works Department (PWD) on Sunday revealed an astonishing inventory of the infamous “Sheesh Mahal”, the luxurious bungalow formerly occupied by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, detailing amenities valued at over Rs 100 crore.
The sprawling 21,000-square-foot residence features a range of opulent items that starkly contrast with the “aam aadmi” image that Kejriwal and his party, the AAP, have long championed.
Among the extravagant features of “Sheesh Mahal” are 16 Ultra Slim Smart 4K TVs, which collectively cost Rs 64 lakh and motorised window curtains valued between Rs 4-6 crore. The bungalow is also adorned with luxurious recliner sofas priced at Rs 10 lakh, highlighting a lifestyle of affluence that has drawn public ire and scrutiny. The inventory was compiled at the request of the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office as it prepares to transition the property to the new Chief Minister, Atishi Marlena.
These revelations come on the heels of allegations that Kejriwal misappropriated taxpayer funds for personal luxury.
In May 2023, media reports first scrutinised his administration for spending exorbitantly on his personal residence, leading to public outrage. The sheer scale of luxury found in “Sheesh Mahal” raised significant questions about the priorities of elected officials who claim to represent the common citizen.
BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya took to social media to highlight the extravagant inventory, drawing attention to the absence of fully automatic TOTO smart toilet seats, each costing between Rs 10-12 lakh. “The surprise is that these luxury toilet seats, designed for Kejriwal’s comfort, are now missing,” Malviya remarked.
The inventory not only includes the extravagant televisions, but also a smart LED TV worth Rs 19.5 lakh, an OSADA full body massage chair, priced at Rs 4 lakh, and a Bose loudspeaker valued at Rs 4.5 lakh. The kitchen features high-end appliances, including smart refrigerators with inbuilt TVs and AI vision screens priced at Rs 9 lakh, a 73-litre steam oven for Rs 9 lakh, and a 50-litre microwave oven costing Rs 6 lakh. Furthermore, a BOSCH Series 8 built-in coffee machine, valued at Rs 2.5 lakh, adds to the list of extravagant kitchen gadgets.
In terms of infrastructure, the residence boasts superior water supply and sanitary installations worth Rs 15 crore. It also features wooden and glass doors with automatic sliding sensors priced at Rs 70 lakh, alongside 24 decorative pillars valued at Rs 36 lakh. The lavishness extends to the lighting fixtures, with 20 grand aged brass entrance sconce outdoor lights worth Rs 10 lakh enhancing the residence’s aesthetic value.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva did not hold back in his criticism of Kejriwal’s lifestyle. “For half the population, owning a Rs 1-crore house is a distant dream. The inventory reveals an extravagant use of public funds that should have been directed toward the needs of the people,” he stated.
Sachdeva further called for Atishi to act ethically by inviting media representatives to inspect the bungalow, asserting that transparency is essential as she prepares to move in.
