MP Khandelwal calls for special cleanliness drive ahead of Diwali
Praveen Khandelwal, Member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk, has formally requested a special cleanliness drive and anti-encroachment campaign in Delhi as the city prepares for upcoming festivals and Diwali.
In a letter to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, Khandelwal expressed concerns over the current state of cleanliness, encroachments and traffic management in the capital.
In the letter, he highlighted that the influx of visitors to Delhi’s markets during the festive season underscores the urgent need for improved sanitation. “Piles of garbage are accumulating in various markets and streets, tarnishing the city’s image and posing health risks,” he stated.
Khandelwal called for a dedicated effort to clean markets, streets and public spaces, especially around temples and religious sites that attract large crowds of devotees during this time.
He also pointed out the deteriorating condition of several roads, which contributes to traffic jams and heightens the risk of accidents. “Prompt repair work on these roads is necessary to facilitate safe movement,” he urged.
Addressing the issue of encroachments, Khandelwal said, “Encroachments obstruct traffic and hinder pedestrian movement, particularly in busy markets. We need a campaign to remove these obstructions to ensure smooth access for the public during the festive period.”
