Massive congestion at Delhi-Noida border as police set up barricades ahead of farmers’ march

Massive traffic snarls caused inconvenience to commuters crossing the Delhi-Noida border on Monday as police set up multiple barricades in view of the farmers’ protest march towards the national capital.

A senior police officer said checking was underway at the border.

Additional Commissioner of Police (east) Sagar Singh Kalsi said, “We have made adequate arrangements in east Delhi borders and have taken all precautionary measures, including anti-riot equipment. We are using drones for vigilance and are also coordinating with traffic police for smooth vehicular movement in the area.”

Aprajita Singh, a resident of Greater Noida, said the barricades put up at the Chilla border were causing inconvenience to commuters.

“It took me about an hour to get through that stretch. The police set up barricades on both sides of the Delhi-Noida border, causing significant traffic congestion, especially on the carriageway heading from Noida to Delhi,” she said.

The Delhi Police, Central Reserve Police Force and Rapid Action Force have been stationed on the Delhi-Noida border as the farmers have begun marching towards the national capital.

“We got some advance information about the farmers’ organisation who have announced a march to Delhi. They have not been permitted to enter the national capital for this protest as the Parliament session is on. We will ensure no law and order situation arises and there are no traffic disruptions so we are coordinating with Noida Police. The police force is deployed at all major and small Delhi-Uttar Pradesh borders.” said DCP (East) Apoorva Gupta.

Farmers under the banners of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) gathered under the Mahamaya flyover in Noida to march towards the national capital.

The farmers have been demanding allocation of 10 per cent of developed plots, implementation of new legal benefits to secure their welfare, and rights and adoption of state committee recommendations aimed at improving farmers’ conditions.
