Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) VK Saxena on Friday directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to launch a month-long special drive to identify illegal immigrants across the Capital.

Citing reports, including those on social media, Saxena expressed concern over a noticeable rise in illegal immigrants, particularly in areas where roads, footpaths and parks have been encroached upon.

In a letter issued by his office, the L-G also instructed the Delhi Chief Secretary, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairperson to take immediate remedial measures.

The directive follows claims that some illegal immigrants are attempting to secure identity documents such as Aadhaar cards and voter IDs using fraudulent paperwork. Saxena highlighted that these documents are being misused to claim citizenship rights, posing potential national security risks.

“Election identity cards provide individuals with the democratic right to vote, which should not be extended to illegal immigrants,” Saxena stated, emphasising the need to prevent misuse of these privileges.

The Chief Secretary has been tasked with ensuring District Magistrates exercise stricter vigilance while verifying identity document applications. Additionally, the Delhi Police have been instructed to focus on areas with public land encroachments and work with Central agencies to take swift action where necessary.

Saxena reiterated the Supreme Court’s directives on preventing unauthorised occupation of public spaces and urged all government agencies to ensure compliance. The coordinated effort aims to address both the legal and security challenges posed by the presence of illegal immigrants in Delhi.
