Kirori Mal College declares 2 DUSU central councillor elections null and void
Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College (KMC) annulled the election results for two central councillor positions in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, citing violations of the Delhi High Court’s orders and the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.
The affected councillors, Chirag, a BA Hons student, and Gurdeep Chhwari from BA Hons Sanskrit, were initially declared winners for the positions. However, the decision to invalidate their elections was made after a review of the election process by the Chief Election Officer, Professor Satyapal Singh, who flagged several violations in accordance with the court’s November 11 ruling and the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
In an official statement issued by the KMC, the college confirmed the annulment, stating, “In compliance with the direction received from the Chief Election Officer and the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, Kirori Mal College declares the election of Chirag and Chhwari to the posts of central councillor as null and void with immediate effect.”
This decision follows Delhi University’s mandate that all candidates sign an affidavit before the elections, pledging not to engage in celebratory practices such as using dhols, fireworks, or holding roadshows once results are announced. These measures aim to ensure a peaceful post-election environment in line with the legal and procedural guidelines established for student elections.
After their victory, supporters of the duo celebrated with a procession involving large vehicles and by scattering pamphlets.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh shared his displeasure over the magnanimous celebrations post declaration of results following the decision to cancel the winners. Earlier, the DU had asked all candidates contesting the students' union elections to sign an affidavit pledging to refrain from using dhols, loudspeakers, firecrackers or pamphlets, both in open and closed premises, after the declaration of results.
