The Delhi Government has formed a special committee in collaboration with IIT-Delhi to investigate the recent incidents of bus fires in the city and recommend preventive measures.

Delhi’s Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot announced the formation of the committee, which will include six experts from various departments at IIT-Delhi, such as mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering as well as the centre for automotive research. The committee will be chaired by Prof Anjan Ray from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The initiative follows two bus fire incidents in recent months — one involving an electric bus on May 19 and another with a CNG bus on August 29.

Gahlot said, “The safety of passengers is our top priority. These unfortunate incidents underline the need for thorough investigations and immediate preventive steps. The committee, formed in collaboration with IIT-Delhi, will bring in the necessary expertise to help us identify the root causes and ensure the safe operation of public transport buses in Delhi.”

The committee is expected to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report in eight weeks. Its mandate includes investigating the causes of the fires in both electric and CNG buses, assessing current maintenance practices, recommending technological solutions to alert drivers of potential fire hazards, and proposing preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
