Govt begins trial run of mohalla buses on 2 routes

The Delhi Government on Wednesday launched trial runs for two new routes of the mohalla bus service in South Delhi. These new routes will operate for seven days, connecting Kailash Colony Metro Station to Geetanjali Enclave and Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station to Vasant Vihar.

Cabinet Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, who represents the Greater Kailash Assembly constituency, along with Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti and RK Puram MLA Parmila Tokas, flagged off trial runs for two new mohalla bus routes in their respective constituencies. Officials highlighted that these new routes, which connect Kailash Colony Metro Station to Geetanjali Enclave and Lok Kalyan Marg Metro Station to Vasant Vihar, will enhance commuter connectivity and help reduce air pollution, as all buses are electric.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot emphasised the significance of these routes, stating, “Through mohalla buses, we are connecting all important places at the local level with public transport to ensure first and last mile connectivity. We have also included major educational institutions such as Motilal Nehru College, Jesus and Mary College, Maitreyi College, Sri Venkateswara College, LSR College, Central School and College of Vocational Studies as stops in the trial of mohalla buses on these new routes. This will address the transport needs of nearby residents, youth and students.”

Speaking to the media after the launch, Bharadwaj noted the longstanding demand from residents of upscale colonies like Greater Kailash Part-1 and Malviya Nagar for a small-bus service like the mohalla bus service. “This service will start from Kailash Colony Metro Station and travel to Lady Shri Ram College for Women, passing through Greater Kailash-1 N Block and M Block Market, Greater Kailash-1 E Block, Greater Kailash-2 Metro Station, Chirag Delhi, College of Vocational Studies, Sheikh Sarai, Press Enclave and finally reaching Geetanjali Bus Depot in Malviya Nagar,” he explained.

Bharadwaj added that the route also covers several Metro stations, Saket Mall, three major markets and large hospitals such as PSRI and Max. “By providing last-mile connectivity from the Metro station to homes through this mohalla bus service, we can address pollution and congestion within Delhi. These electric buses produce zero emissions, making it a significant step forward,” he said.
