To expand its city bus services, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will soon begin constructing a new bus depot in Sector 48, Gurugram. The authority will also develop 154 additional bus queue shelters to improve civic infrastructure and enhance public transport services. These projects have been assigned to the agency.

The new bus depot in Sector 48 will be built on 7.5 acres at a cost of Rs 17 crore and will accommodate up to 100 e-buses, which will be added to the Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) fleet. The depot will also feature an electric substation to provide optimal charging facilities for the electric buses.

Additionally, the GMDA will construct 80 new bus queue shelters along Sectors 68 to 95, from Southern Peripheral Road to Northern Peripheral Road, at a cost of Rs 17.95 crore. Another 74 bus queue shelters will be built in Sectors 99-115, along the Upper Dwarka Expressway, at a cost of Rs 15.82 crore.

The project will include provisions for bus laybys wherever feasible, minimising disruption to traffic flow and ensuring safer boarding and alighting for passengers.

A Sreenivas, CEO of GMDA, chaired a review meeting with GMCBL, discussing key initiatives to strengthen bus services. Topics included fleet expansion, the addition of new routes, digital ticketing, smart payment solutions, CCTV surveillance and the maintenance of buses.
