Gurugram youth Ashutosh overcomes deafness to become inspiration
Ashutosh, a resident of Gurugram, has proved that no obstacle is insurmountable. Born deaf in 1992, Ashutosh’s inspiring journey has defied expectations, culminating in his recent recognition with the prestigious ‘ Shreshth Divyangjan Award’, presented by President Droupadi Murmu. His story is a testament to resilience, determination and the belief that “Nothing is impossible, I can do it”.
From a young age, Ashutosh faced significant challenges due to his 100% hearing impairment. Despite this, his parents were determined to provide him a normal education, enrolling him in a regular school rather than a special one. Ashutosh recalls, “My parents knew the challenges I would face, but they were adamant that I lead a normal life. They worked tirelessly to help me keep up with my peers, my mother even quit her job to take care of me.”
His mother, Sudhesh Sharma, a retired economics lecturer, played a pivotal role in his education. “Ashutosh faced many difficulties in a regular school. When he couldn’t understand something, he couldn’t ask the teachers for help, so I would teach him at home to ensure he stayed on track,” she said.
Ashutosh’s journey was filled with extra effort. He studied at Delhi Public School, Maruti Kunj, from nursery to 12th standard, where his teachers often recommended special schooling. But his parents refused to let him take that route, instead opting to support him in overcoming the extra challenges. “It was never easy for him,” his mother said, “but he always pushed himself to do his best”.
Ashutosh’s academic journey continued as he pursued a BCom Honors degree at Hans Raj College. Despite his hearing impairment, he harboured dreams of studying at an IIM and taking the CAT exam. Though his first attempt didn’t result in success, Ashutosh’s perseverance never wavered. “People told me that the CAT exam was tough, and getting into IIM was even harder, but I refused to give up,” Ashutosh explained. His hard work paid off when he finally secured admission to IIM Lucknow, where he became a core member of the college’s drama society, Abhivyakti, participating in over 20 plays, including performances with dubbed dialogues.
The journey didn’t stop there. Living by his motto, “Nothing is impossible”, Ashutosh decided to take part in the Mr India Plus Model competition for plus-sized models. His performance was met with great admiration, and he went on to win the title on February 28, 2021. “The experience was surreal,” Ashutosh said. “It taught me that confidence and self-belief are the keys to breaking barriers.”
Ashutosh’s achievements continued to snowball, and he soon had the opportunity to walk the runway at the prestigious FDCI x Lakme Fashion Week on March 27, 2022. His journey of breaking stereotypes has earned him recognition beyond the fashion world; he has been nominated for the Hindustan Times HT City 30 under 30, a list of India’s most influential individuals under 30 who have made a significant impact.
Today, Ashutosh works as a Credit Risk Analyst at *IndusInd Bank*, proving that his potential knows no limits. “The journey hasn’t been easy, but the challenges have made me stronger. I’ve always believed that if you have the determination, you can overcome anything,” he said.
