Fire breaks out in Delhi's Rajouri Garden market
A massive fire broke out on Monday afternoon in a multi-storeyed building at the bustling Rajouri Garden market in West Delhi, police officials said on Monday.
According to Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg, a distress call was received at 2:01 pm after which 10 fire tenders were dispatched to the site located near the Rajouri Garden Metro Station.
The fire incident occured due to short-circuit in the wiring on the first floor. The fire erupted in a corner building situated on Najafgarh Road, which houses a mix of commercial establishments. These include several shops on the ground floor, a restaurant Jungle Jamboree, and an educational institute, MAAC Rajouri, on the upper floors. Police said that the restaurant Jungle Jamboree was closed at the time of the incident.
A thick black smoke engulfed the vicinity, prompting authorities to cordon off the area to facilitate firefighting operations.
Disturbing visuals from the site showed panicked individuals leaping onto adjacent rooftops to escape the spreading fire.
DCP (West), Vichitra Veer, said that no casualties had been reported so far. However, one person sustained injuries during the rescue operation.
“The fire is under control. No casualties have been reported. However, the owners of establishments have been asked to account for all individuals present in the premises at the time. One person, injured during the rescue, is undergoing treatment and has no major injuries,” Veer said.
