New Delhi, August 28

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has officially scheduled the ward committee elections for the appointment of chairmen and deputy chairmen for each of the 12 zonal bodies on September 4. The elections, which have been delayed by over a year and a half due to a political deadlock between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Opposition BJP, will be conducted via secret ballot, as per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Regulations, 1958.

According to the official order, councillors can file their nominations with the municipal secretary till August 30. The elections for six zones — City and SP Zone, Rohini Zone, Najafgarh Zone, West Zone, South Zone and Central Zone —will be held from 10 am to 4 pm at the Hansraj Gupta Auditorium at the MCD headquarters.

Simultaneously, elections for the remaining six zones — Karol Bagh Zone, Keshav Puram Zone, Shahdara South Zone, Shahdara North Zone, Civil Lines Zone and Narela Zone —will be held at the Satya Narayan Bansal Auditorium, also at the MCD headquarters.

As per the MCD regulations, candidates must submit their nomination papers, signed by the candidate and two other members of the corporation, to the municipal secretary by August 30. Candidates may withdraw their nominations at any point before the election commences.

These elections mark a crucial step toward the formation of the MCD’s standing committee, the highest decision-making body of the corporation. As stipulated by the DMC regulations, the ward committees, in their first meeting each year, elect one of their members as chairman and another as deputy chairman of the zonal body. They also nominate one member each to the standing committee. The September 4 elections will serve as the first meeting of the ward committees.

The delay in holding these elections has stalled several key policy decisions that require the administrative approval of the standing committee, leaving many development projects in limbo.

Reacting to the announcement, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor hailed it as a victory for democracy in the city. Kapoor accused the AAP of suppressing the constitutional and democratic committees within the MCD for the past 19 months.
