Delhi witnesses heavy rain; 'red' alert issued

New Delhi, July 31

The national capital was deluged following a heavy spell of rain on Wednesday evening with a red alert issued and more than 10 flights to Delhi diverted.

Vast parts of Delhi including Old Rajinder Nagar, Connaught Place, ITO, Lutyen's zone, and all other parts were waterlogged with traffic jams reported all over the city.

There were reports of house collapses with some people feared trapped in a house collapse in Sadar Bazar area of old Delhi.

There was no sign of traffic police in major parts with traffic halted across major intersections.

Weather officials said clouds had formed over Delhi from all four sectors and issued a red alert.

"Extremely intense spell of rain occurred over Delhi. Extremely intense spell is defined by 5-10 cm/hour of rain," the IMD said.

The road outside the Old Rajinder Nagar coaching centre, where three students had died on Saturday evening after water from a nearby drain filled up the basement flooding it, was again flooded.

Delhi L-G VK Saxena posted on X: "Have cautioned all officers to remain alert in light of the ongoing heavy downpour in Delhi. Apart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres."
