The Delhi Metro has seen a significant rise in theft cases this year, with 3,952 incidents reported as of September 8, according to data from the Delhi Police. This marks an increase of 242 cases compared to the same period last year, when 3,709 cases were recorded. The reported thefts include incidents of pickpocketing, missing mobile phones, stolen purses and other valuables, affecting both passengers and staff, as well as Metro property.

Of the total cases reported this year, 3,898 were registered through the e-FIR system, with 548 cases resolved so far. Last year, 3,648 of the 3,709 theft cases were registered via e-FIR, with 1,471 cases resolved.

The data also highlights a rise in motor vehicle thefts, with 81 cases reported so far in 2024, compared to 72 cases in the same period last year. Of these, 56 cases have been solved this year, while last year saw 61 cases resolved by the same date.

Robbery cases have seen a similar upward trend, with five cases reported in 2024, four of which have been solved. In contrast, only one robbery case was reported last year.

The Delhi Metro’s security is jointly managed by the Delhi Police and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also deploying personnel to ensure safety at platforms.

There are 190 Metro stations across Delhi, with 16 Metro police stations handling case registration and investigations. The CISF oversees frisking and security checks, while Delhi Police personnel patrol the Metro trains and premises regularly.

A senior officer said security measures are continuously updated in collaboration with the DMRC and CISF to ensure passenger safety amidst the growing number of thefts.
