New Delhi, February 10
Responding to repeated requests from residents, Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena visited the Kirari area in northwest Delhi on Saturday. He expressed dismay at the sorry state of basic civic infrastructure and the lack of sanitation in the locality.
Peeved at the government’s apathy towards the area, Saxena directed all relevant departments and agencies to promptly devise a comprehensive action plan to address long-standing issues.
Saxena inspected various locations in Kirari plagued by severe waterlogging and littered with heaps of garbage. Officials at Raj Niwas reported, “Appalled by the deplorable living conditions endured by residents in these areas, the L-G instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and other concerned agencies to take immediate measures to enhance sanitation within a month.”
The L-G visibly expressed discontent at the sight of overflowing sewers, open manholes, piles of garbage, potholed and dusty roads and broken pavements in the area.
Notably, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also visited Kirari recently to inaugurate four new government schools.
The L-G lamented that the neglect by government agencies had resulted in the dismal conditions, leaving Kirari, with nearly 1.5 lakh households and a population of 7-8 lakh, as one of the most underdeveloped parts of the capital, officials said.
Over the years, Kirari has become one of the most densely populated areas, covering 2,800 acres of geographical area. Formerly utilised for brick-kilns, extensive excavation of soil has transformed the area into a bowl-shaped terrain. Subsequently, settlements and unauthorised colonies emerged at the same surface level, rendering the area highly susceptible to severe waterlogging.
