Delhi Cops deny communal angle in Jahangirpuri temple clash

A CCTV video surfaced on social media showing an alleged stone-pelting incident inside a temple in the Jahangirpuri area in North West Delhi. Police officials said on Tuesday that two groups of young people of the same community had clashed due to previous enmity.

Police officials said the incident occurred around 8.15 pm on Monday night. They said two groups, consisting of juveniles, clashed with each other near the temple premises.

DCP (North West), Abhishek Dhania said, “Two groups of juveniles clashed near the temple and one group entered inside and stones were pelted against each other. A police team reached the spot and verified that the juveniles from both groups and belonged to the same community/religion.”

The Deputy Commissioner of Police added that during the investigation, it came to light that both groups had previously been engaged in enmity and the recent clash was also due to the same. Among them, three juveniles were found to be Child in Conflict with Law (CCL).

The police said they received several calls regarding the incident. Two juveniles had received injuries during the clash and they were taken to hospital for treatment and discharged later.

Dhania said statements had been recorded from the injured juveniles and legal action had been initiated in the incident.

“Besides, some people tried to disturb harmony in the area. Through social media, especially through X (formerly Twitter), some people tried to project the video in a communal way. The posts were fake, there is no communal angle in the incident. These people tried to equate the incident with the temple. However, it had no role, rather than enmity between two juvenile groups. Deliberately, videos were edited to disrupt communal harmony. The cyber team of the district has narrowed it down to two to three profiles and legal action is being taken,” said Dhania.
