Delhi chokes under dense smog, minister calls review meeting
The national capital woke up to smog-laden air for the second consecutive day on Thursday with an Air Quality Index (AQI) classified as 'severe.'
The AQI surged higher, clocked at 438, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Amid worsening air quality in the capital, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has called a high-level review meeting with officials of various departments.
On Wednesday, the AQI breached ‘severe’ category for the first time this season, clocked at 418.
As pollution levels continue to soar, Delhi has been blanketed by a dense layer of smog, resulting in hazardous conditions across the city.
Meanwhile, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is also likely to consider stricter restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
Currently, Stage-II restrictions are in place, while third and fourth stage restrictions can be implemented to control the rising pollution levels in the capital.
Delhi has consistently struggled with poor air quality during the winter months due to a combination of factors, including vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, construction dust, and stubble burning in neighbouring states.
