Delhi Cabinet extends Electric Vehicle Policy till March 31
The Delhi Cabinet on Thursday announced the revival of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy, extending it until March 31, 2025, Chief Minister Atishi said.
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, in a post on X, said, “Congratulations to the people of Delhi. The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy is being restarted. Now, subsidies for electric vehicles bought after January 1, 2024, will be transferred directly to buyers’ accounts. Some people conspired to stop this too, but we have successfully restarted it.”
Atishi criticised the opposition for failing to implement electric vehicle (EV) policies in their own states, claiming they conspired to prevent the policy in Delhi by imprisoning Kejriwal and halting its progress for months. “Due to this conspiracy, EV buyers missed out on subsidies, and road tax exemptions were not granted,” she said.
She assured that subsidies for electric vehicles sold after January 1, 2024, would be transferred to buyers’ accounts, and road tax exemptions would be provided to future EV buyers.
The Chief Minister emphasised that policies such as doorstep delivery services, the Delhi Solar Policy and the Delhi EV Policy are pivotal in transforming Delhi into a modern 21st-century city.
Atishi pointed out that while Kejriwal was in jail, the government’s work was stalled. Pensions for the elderly and widows were stopped, daily road and sewer work was halted and salaries for many Delhi government employees were withheld, including the suspension of the EV policy.
However, she claimed that many stalled projects resumed once Kejriwal was released.
“In today’s Delhi Cabinet meeting, several important decisions were taken to benefit the people of Delhi and restart delayed projects,” she said.
Atishi shared that the Delhi Cabinet had decided to restart the EV Policy, which was introduced in August 2020, making Delhi the first state to implement such a progressive policy.
She added that the policy had led to a 12 per cent increase in the registration of electric vehicles in Delhi, up from 4 per cent in 2019-20. “By 2023-24, more than 12 per cent of registered vehicles in Delhi were electric, the highest in the country and double the national average of 6 per cent,” she added.
Atishi announced that those who purchased electric vehicles in Delhi between January 1, 2024, and now but did not receive subsidies would be compensated, and future buyers would be granted road tax exemptions.
