The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched a special drive to curb winter pollution, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said during a press conference on Tuesday.

As part of the initiative, junior engineers and sanitary staff are tasked with submitting daily reports on the removal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste from their respective wards.

Oberoi emphasised, “C&D waste is a significant contributor to the city’s pollution, especially in the winter months. This year, we are stepping up our efforts with daily inspections to ensure better waste management across Delhi.”

Deputy and assistant commissioners will conduct daily inspections in each of the city’s 12 zones.

Last year, the MCD had established designated sites for the disposal of C&D waste across the city. However, Oberoi noted that more needed to be done. “The MCD’s biggest responsibility remains improving the garbage management system, and we are committed to making visible progress,” she said.

The Mayor also mentioned that the updated reports from engineers and staff would play a crucial role in tracking the progress. “We have 250 wards, and this drive will ensure accountability. Junior engineers, maintenance teams and sanitary staff all will be required to submit daily updates,” she added.

The special drive comes as part of the city’s annual efforts to mitigate pollution during the winter, a time when air quality in the Capital typically worsens.
